How to Nail a Job Interview

I’ve gone on more than a few job interviews in the course of my career. And lemme just say, not all were stellar performances.

In one interview, I was so busy trying to be charming, I completely neglected to tell them all the ways I had the perfect skills and experience to excel in the role!

Luckily, I learned from that experience and now do a much better job preparing for the interview, which makes me a much better interviewee.

I shared my thoughts on “How to Nail a Job Interview” for a recent article. This advice is a direct result of that really bad interview!

Make an outline prior to the interview

Take time prior to the interview to outline what you want to say, what you want to convey, and what you want the interviewer to really know about you and your experience.

Make a list of all the ways you would be great in the position and identify corresponding real-life examples of how you’ve succeeded in similar roles. Write down all the key points of the job description and how you will excel in each one with a corresponding success story.

Then, practice your responses! Practice showing how you can deliver specific results. Practice addressing what you would like to accomplish in the position.

Study all the points you want to make

Know all the points you want to make so they come naturally to you during the interview. Then, like a good politician, slip in your prepared talking points when answering the questions they ask.

If the interviewer doesn’t ask a question that enables you to utilize your practiced statements of how you will excel in the position, ask, “Would you like to hear what I’d like to accomplish in the position?” Then, provide all your reasons and examples that demonstrate how you will take the position to the next level.

Make sure you address all your talking points before the interviewer ends the interview and shows you to the door.

To really nail a job interview, be prepared to demonstrate you are not only the best person for the job but leave them thinking you are the only person for the job.
